Transferable warranty
Coverage that can pass to the next owner when the car is sold — defined per plan, sometimes with a fee and a filing deadline.
Part of the Buying & transferring cluster.
What it means
A transferable warranty is coverage whose terms allow a subsequent owner to take over when the vehicle is sold. Factory powertrain warranties in many programs transfer automatically; extended plans and CPO coverages often require a written transfer, sometimes with a fee and a time limit.
Why it matters
Transferability changes resale value directly. When buying used, confirm in writing which coverages still apply to you — and when selling, completed transfer paperwork protects both sides of the deal.
What it is NOT
It is not automatic for every plan, not a restart of the original term, and not a new warranty — it continues what remains of the old one.
