Powertrain

The warranty on the parts that make the car move — engine, transmission, and drive axle. Usually the longest factory term on the vehicle.

Part of the Coverage types cluster.

What it means

The powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, transaxle, transfer case, and drive axle assemblies against defects. It usually runs longer than the bumper-to-bumper warranty — commonly 5 years or 60,000 miles, and on some manufacturers longer.

Why it matters

Powertrain repairs are the most expensive repairs a car can need. Knowing your powertrain term — and that it outlasts the basic warranty — is the single most valuable number on your coverage sheet.

What it is NOT

It does not cover the whole driveline experience. Clutches are wear items, sensors and wiring often fall under the basic warranty, and damage from overheating or abuse is excluded.

Terms in this glossary describe general warranty practice and US norms — they are informational, not legal advice, and not a reading of your specific warranty booklet.
