In-service date
The day the vehicle was first put into use — the day every warranty clock starts counting, regardless of who owns it now.
Part of the Buying & transferring cluster.
What it means
The in-service date is when the vehicle was first sold, leased, or placed in service. Every warranty duration in months is counted from this date, not from the model year and not from when you bought the car used.
Why it matters
A used car can be nearly out of warranty even if it looks new. Two years of remaining coverage on paper can be zero in practice if the car went into service 5 years ago. Always ask for the in-service date — it is usually on the window paperwork or in the dealer’s system.
What it is NOT
It is not the model year, not the build date on the door sticker, and not the date you personally bought the car unless you were the first owner.
