Certified pre-owned (CPO)
A used vehicle inspected and reconditioned to one manufacturer’s standards and sold with a defined warranty package and paperwork.

What it means
A certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle is a used car that passed a manufacturer-defined inspection, was reconditioned, and is sold with a CPO warranty package and often extras like roadside assistance. Each manufacturer writes its own inspection list and coverage terms.
Why it matters
CPO status is a paper product as much as a mechanical one — the inspection checklist and the CPO warranty booklet are where the value lives. Read both before paying the CPO premium over a comparable non-CPO car.
What it is NOT
It is not a new-car warranty, not a guarantee the car is problem-free, and not the same program across manufacturers — the word “certified” is defined by each program, not by a national standard.
