Emissions defect warranty

The half of emissions coverage that pays for defects in emissions-control parts — usually the shorter of the two emissions terms.

Part of the Coverage types cluster.

What it means

The emissions defect warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship of parts that affect emissions — catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, engine control modules, and related components. Federal rules set minimum terms; some manufacturers exceed them.

Why it matters

A check-engine light is often an emissions part, and the defect warranty can be in force when the basic warranty is gone. Asking whether a fault is emissions-related changes which term applies — and how long you have.

What it is NOT

It is not the performance warranty (that one is about keeping emissions within standards over time), not a general engine warranty, and not unlimited in duration.

Terms in this glossary describe general warranty practice and US norms — they are informational, not legal advice, and not a reading of your specific warranty booklet.
