Emission performance warranty

The long emissions term that promises the vehicle keeps meeting emissions standards — commonly 8 years/80,000 miles on major components.

Part of the Coverage types cluster.

What it means

The emission performance warranty is the longer half of federal emissions coverage. It requires the vehicle to keep meeting applicable emissions standards for a specified period — commonly eight years or 80,000 miles for major components like the catalytic converter and engine control module.

Why it matters

This is frequently the longest coverage on the car. When a catalytic converter fails at year six, the performance warranty — not the basic warranty — is the term to quote at the counter.

What it is NOT

It is not a maintenance warranty, not coverage for tampering, and not identical everywhere — California and states that follow its standards set their own terms.

Terms in this glossary describe general warranty practice and US norms — they are informational, not legal advice, and not a reading of your specific warranty booklet.
