California emissions warranty
California-set emissions coverage terms — longer than federal minimums, and they also apply in states that follow California standards.
Part of the Coverage types cluster.
What it means
California emissions warranties are state-set coverage terms for emissions-related defects and performance, generally longer than the federal minimums. Vehicles certified to California standards — and registered in states that adopt them — carry these terms instead of the federal ones.
Why it matters
Where the vehicle is registered decides which emissions term applies. In a California-standards state, the same model can have years more emissions coverage than the federal minimum — worth confirming before paying for an emissions repair.
What it is NOT
It is not a separate policy you buy, not a smog-check guarantee, and not universal — certification and registration state govern which terms follow the car.
