Insurance vs warranty
Insurance pays for accident and theft losses; warranties and service contracts pay for the breakdowns their terms name. Different questions.
Part of the Plans & alternatives cluster.
What it means
Vehicle insurance covers sudden external losses — collisions, theft, weather, liability — under an insurance policy. Warranties and service contracts cover mechanical breakdowns defined in their terms. The two answer different questions and are regulated separately.
Why it matters
Knowing which policy a repair belongs to prevents dead-end phone calls. A tree falling on the car is insurance; a failed transmission is warranty or contract territory; a pothole-bent wheel is often neither.
What it is NOT
It is not a judgment about which is better, not a coverage guarantee for any specific event, and not the same product as an extended warranty despite similar monthly-payment sales pitches.
