Warranty vs service contract

The real difference between the two instruments: a warranty comes with the product; a service contract is bought separately.

Part of the Plans & alternatives cluster.

What it means

A warranty is provided with the product by its maker as part of the bargain; a vehicle service contract is a separate, separately priced agreement to pay for certain repairs. Both can cover breakdowns, but they are different instruments with different rules, regulators, and remedies.

Why it matters

Sales language blurs the two on purpose. Knowing which instrument you are holding tells you which rules apply when a claim is disputed — and what you are actually entitled to.

What it is NOT

It is not a quality ranking — a good service contract can beat a weak warranty, and neither covers everything. This term describes the category difference only; it is not legal advice.

Terms in this glossary describe general warranty practice and US norms — they are informational, not legal advice, and not a reading of your specific warranty booklet.
